Description
Up for your consideration is an antique Chinese hand painted portrait on silk of Quan Yin, the "goddess of mercy". She is also known to be "born of the lotus". The lotus symbolizes the holy seat of Buddha and means perfection and purity of both the heart and mind. Among Buddhist gods, she is loved rather than feared and is the model of Chinese beauty. She is also thought to be the "goddess of fertility".There are no signature stamps or markings on this art work, so I am unsure of exactly how old this painting is. It appears to be watercolor, or an Asian type of brush painting called ink wash.
This is a beautiful old piece that I bought years ago at the grand-daughter of a famous artist's home in Colorado. However, this is not artwork by that artist, it was just a part of her high end Asian art collection. The only information I was given on the piece is that it is antique, hand painted on silk, and of the goddess Quan Yin.
This is a large piece that is framed by a gold lined, off white mat board inside a gold & black wooden frame. The frame measures 25"h x 17 5/8"w, the silk piece alone is approx. 17"h x 11 1/4"w. The frame has a wire hanger on the back. The back has a thin piece of wood as the backing and the frame is missing 1 corner metal piece, but is still held together just fine.
The overall quality is quite good for its age; however, there are a few spots that look like just spots of paint underneath the lotus flower and then spots of white paint on the left of the painting and above the lotus flower on her hand. Please look at all photos for a closer look at details.
