These beautiful portraits of a lion and deer, attributed to Gao Jianfu are a rare occurrence in Chinese painting, since they combine the versatile Chinese brushwork with Japanese and Western influences in composition and the use of colour. It is well known that a number of early modern Chinese painters looked first towards Japan to learn to integrate Western and oriental approaches (the other notable ones being Fu Baoshi and Zhang Daqian).
Light colour and an extremely fine and spontaneous brushwork contribute to the simple poetry of these animal portraits.
A Google search
of "Lingnan School of Painting" will bring up articles on this important southern school created by Gao Jianfu in the early 20th Century.
