This beautiful painting should be of great interest to both collectors and art historians since, although it bears two seals attributed to Shitao, it is most probably by the hand of Huang Qiuyuan 黄秋园 (1914-1979), whose importance is only recently being recognized as a very original modern interpreter of traditional Chinese painting. As such, he was particularly inspired by the works of Shitao (Qing Dynasty) and Wang Meng (Yuan Dynasty). According to Li Keran, a famous 20th Century painter:
"Huang's paintings combine the advantages of Shi Xi, Shi Tao and Wang Meng and created a style of his own."
To supplement his meagre income as a bank clerk for 35 years, he created a sizable number of landscapes to which he affixed forged Shitao seals. In my opinion, these display a remarkable mastery of traditional painting combined with bold composition, energetic brushwork and Huang's own poetic take on Shitao's legacy.
One can find many images of his works on Google Images, Pinterest and auction sites, and at least two on the website of the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC).
