This beautiful painting succeeds in evoking the excitement of two friends surrounded by a monumental landscape. Attributed to Fu Baoshi, it places two scholars in a pavilion at the centre of the artist's favourite theme of the waterfall. This theme is often presented as "listening to the cleansing sound" - in multiple settings and with diverse effects. This particular 'aural orientation' in many of Fu Baoshi's landscapes could be traced back to
'Sound of thunder in the distance'
, a famous painting by the 17th Century master Shitao, who was a major influence on the artist.
The inscription and two seals are attributed to Fu Baoshi. The seal on the lower right is known to have been used at different periods, notably in 1941 and 1947. It says: "Often after being drunk" (
    wangwang zuihou
    ).
